Dr. Pieter Steenkamp's love of animals began as a boy when he spent many nights camping in the wild. A native of South Africa, he graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 2000 with a degree in Computer Science and mathematics, and the University of Pretoria, where he received a degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2006. He went on to obtain his board certification in wildlife medicine while studying anthrax in Kruger National Park in 2013. After meeting his wife, they moved to the United States, where he has practiced in small animal emergency medicine since 2014. He has a special interest in surgery, wildlife, and exotics. 

Dr. Steenkamp is married to fellow veterinarian, and together they share their home with many pets. In his spare time, he enjoys ultramarathons and the outdoors.
